We sent off version 1.6 to Apple a couple days ago. There is nothing at all in the way of changes in this one. This release was just to deal with the issues that iPhone OS 3.0 caused. As soon as Apple gives it the OK we are going to get working on a version with some of the changes you may have read about in the comments on various posts.
UPDATE: There is a problem on Apple’s end with Feeds in the App Store. We spoke to them a few hours ago and they are hopefully working on the problem. They could not provide an ETA for us as to when Feeds will be available in the App Store again.
UPDATE 2: We have no idea whatsoever when Apple will fix the issue of Feeds not being in the App Store. They *claim* they fixed it yesterday but it sure doesn’t look like it from our perspective. Trying to communicate with them is the most frustrating experience on earth. 3 different departments are responsible for this part of the App Store and each of them claims they have no phone numbers for the other departments. Only one department lets us call them. All that department does is send an email to the other department. It is agonizingly difficult to get any relevant information from them. End rant.
FINAL UPDATE: Feeds is FINALLY propagating itself back into all the App Stores across the world. Thank you everyone for your patience. Apple has added many gray hairs this week….
This is most excellent news!
Will this fix the swipe issues?
@Chris, this update will fix the swipe issues.
I recently purchased Feeds and I can only say I wish I had found this app sooner. Thank you for a great RSS reader.
I have one feature request, I currently have the google reader setting “Show Only Unread” turned on, but the reader always shows all my labels even if they do not have any unread items. This does not make logical sense as if I select one of those labels the app will not show any feeds at all. It is an unneeded use of screen real estate.
I have also noticed a minor bug if a feed shows up in more than one label. After reading all of the messages under one label, the badge of the second label does not update to reflect the change in number of unread messages. If I select the second label the feed listing under it does show that it has no unread messages.
@Scott, glad you like the app. We actually have a feature request on our list to hide all the folders/feeds that dont have any read items when ‘Show only Unread’ is on. That should make it into an update soon.
We are aware of the issues with feed items and multiple labels. Unfortunately, we don’t yet have full tag support as you have found out.
@Mike, great to hear about the feature coming soon. I look forward to it. Do you have a comprehensive road map of features some place?
Another nice to have feature would be the ability to navigate back and forward in the built-in browser. Right now you can only go back to the feed list (I like this option btw), but if I start navigating away from the original blog entry, I have no way to get back without going all the way out and back in.
A nice option to have would be to expand the selected blog entry in the current list without having to go to a new screen (like the iphone version of the google reader website) and have a click-able area to go to the original entry using the internal browser. I have some entries which are blank in the RSS feed and you need to go to the blog web page to read the article. At this point I have to go through an intermediate screen before I can actually read the content.
@Scott, the road map is currently hidden away on our to do list. We haven’t taken the time to make a fancy public facing one.
There is a secret way to go back when you are navigating on a website: just shake your iPhone. This will get you as far back as the first page you visiting (not the feed description page).
@Mike, after reading through all the comments on another blog post I saw the indication around using the shake feature to go back. Thanks for the pointer though.
I am still trying to understand the sync back feature for google reader integration. I currently have it set to 1/2 hour because I switch between the iphone and web page regularly. I saw a comment from you in another post around using the “Mark All Read”. I use this feature regularly, does this automatically mark the feeds read on the google server?
@Scott, Feeds will mark all read on the server as well as the iPhone. It sounds like 1/2 hour will work fine for you. If for some reason you end up with odd unread items on your iPhone that you read on Google Reader a ‘mark all read’ for that feed will get them back in sync instantly.
Great app you have created there. Probably the one I use the most.
The only thing that troubles me is that when landscape mode is enabled, it makes it impossible to read in the bed, as all directions make the display to rotate.
Please, make one side (usually the upper one) non reactive, as you can see in other apps (Safari…) so it fixes the landscape display in place and make it possible to read a bit before going to sleep
good. I thought you had stopped to do iphone applications.
@DanV, do you mean hiding the top/bottom bar when in landscape?
@oomu, you can’t get rid of us that easily. Our to-do list for Feeds is still lengthy enough to keep updates coming for a long time to come. Not to mention the fact that we are rewriting most of the program from scratch to clean things up. We were working on an iPhone app that Apple rejected for a couple months so development on Feeds was slow.
Are Push notifications on your ” road map … hidden away on our to do list.”?
@Todd, push notifications aren’t on the road map. We can’t figure out a viable way to pair Push with RSS feeds. If notifications were to be sent out every time a new article gets posted my iPhone would be getting a Push notification every minute or so. Not to mention Google would black list us in a second if we checked every users feed count. Another obstacle is we have strict privacy measures in place so your password never touches our servers. Push would not only require users passwords on our servers, but we would have to store them which we are not in any way planning on doing.
@Mike,
Try to rotate the iPhone slowly with Safari open by 360 degrees and see how it behaves. When it is oriented with headphone jack at the bottom, the screen is fixed in landscape allowing you to read it while lying down on your side.
Would be great to have Feeds behaving the same way. I am sure it is a matter of no time for you to code it.
I still can’t decide between ReadItLater Pro and InstaPaper Pro – got both, and whenever I want to read a feed later I just choose between them or both.
Mike, when I choose Instapaper it takes me to a page with a large SAVE button I have to press to then send it to InstaPaper. Can this be bypassed as I notice when I choose ReadItLater it is pretty instant with a nice little animated message you quickly popup at the bottom.
Another feature I miss is being able to double-tap zoom/unzoom and pinch zoom/unzoom – most of the other RSS readers let you do this, especially useful for zooming in to see more detail in an image etc….
Other than that, Feeds is used so many times a day still I can’t live without it!
1.6 now available in app store.
It cant be updated for those in the Canadian Itunes store. It says the item you are trying to buy is no longer available.
Hmm… Anyone else getting the “The item you tried to buy is no longer available” error message? I get it on both the iPhone and from iTunes. I know it is a minor update but…
I’m getting the error on my iPhone (US store).
@ #19 : I also get this error directly on the iPhone AND thru iTunes app Store. The strange thing is I’m getting another message now on iTunes when I try to reach Feeds’ page saying that the item moved and is not longer offer on iTunes Canada
I can’t get the update it says item no longer available?
Uh-oh. Tried the delete/reinstall route and now I’m without Feeds altogether. Sounds like an app store issue. Hopefully to be resolved soon? Any info from Prime31?
Looks like we have a problem with the App Store. We won’t be able to get in touch with Apple until tomorrow. We will keep you all updated.
Me too…same error…bummer…
thanks i also get not available in US itunes store error lol
I’m also getting an error message from the iTunes App Store. I can’t update either from iTunes or from the iPhone, and when I got to look at the application in the iTunes store on my Mac it says:
Your request could not be completed.
The item you’ve requested is not currently available in the US store.
Hey Mike,
I must have been the only one to get the update
…
Anyway, everything seems back to normal, with only a couple items to note. The first is the feed count – but I’m beginning to think this is a Google Reader issue, not Feeds, as I’ve noticed that Google Reader’s feed counts are incorrect at times. So this may not actually be a Feeds issue. Hopefully Google will clean this up and will be flawless with their API release.
The only other thing I would mention is the swipe to star/read. I don’t know if this is a product of Feeds or the 3GS’s responsiveness as compared to the 3G, but Feeds is constantly starring items when all I’m doing is scrolling through the list of feeds. I don’t know if the sensitivity is too high for the side-swipe, or what’s causing it, but in reading through about 200 items this morning, I had to unstar undesired starred items probably 20-30 times, which became really annoying. Has anyone else noticed this? If so, maybe we could get a sensitivity setting to alleviate the potential differences between 3G and 3GS responsiveness (if this is even the cause), as I never had this problem with my 3G.
Other than that, it’s doing well and is still irreplaceable! Thanks for all your hard work and customer response!
I am getting the same error trying to update.
There is a problem on Apples end. We spoke to them a few minutes ago and they referred to a department that apparently does not use telephones. We sent off an email immediately and can only hope they will respond in a timely fashion.
it took a few minutes for the app store to be up for me and give me feeds 1.6
I’m sorry for your rejected application.
same issue with the portuguese store. no way to update.
Please see update above.
Same problem here in the portuguese store. Hopefully Apple will fix this sometime soon.
Hi Mike. I enjoy the app. I see your weariness with push notifications above. It would be nice to get a badge notification though instead of a popup which I also would find annoying.
@Chris, push notification will never happen with Feeds for one major reason: we cannot and will not take part in storing anyones Google username and password on our servers. Storing that information (which would be required for push notifications) is a security and privacy risk that we will not take.
Now the Feeds app is completely missing from the US Apple Store. It used to come up in searches, but report it was unavailable when you tried to download it or bring up it’s page.
I’ve got the same issue as Victor above with the swipe/star, seems to be starring items that I’m not meaning to. Never use star myself but found another 8 in their I had to un-star today.
@ #36
Same here in iTunes Canada Store. Maybe they just pull it out and will replace it correctly?
Waiting for it to reappear in the store to buy
No sign of Feeds (or Prime31) in the app store here in the Netherlands. It’s really frustrating to read all the great reviews you’ve been getting then discover the app is ‘missing in action’.
@Ark, we have called Apple and sent multiple emails every day this week and they still haven’t resolved the situation.
@Mike, Push notification has to do with Google because in order to know if any particular user should receive a push notification we would have to poll Google Reader using their username and password then send out a push if we find unread items.
WOOT! It’s back up and updated successfully. Sorry about the headache. What a pain!
Finally available in the US store! Downloaded and installed smoothly! Thanks for keeping us updated
Yessss! It worked also on Canada Store
YEAAAAAA! The swipe is back!
This is one of the most used, most loved apps on my iPhone! Thanks, and keep up the great work!
Did something change wrt starred items being displayed? I have it set to show only unread items but starred items always used to appear regardless (this was good). Now my stared list is empty. I usually glance at an article that catches my eye and then star it if I want to read it in more depth. This causes it to appear as read. I guess I could sign up for a readitlater account, just curious if this change was intentional.
How can I tell what version of Feeds I have?
@Max, you can see the build number (not the version number from the App Store) by right clicking the application icon in iTunes and choose Get Info. The build number is usually just about the same as version number + 1.
@Mike – Thanks – iTunes shows the version is 3.6. There is no build number shown.
I love Feeds, but for whatever reason I no longer have a button for Settings. This means that I can’t change the Google Reader account, the
Read It Later account, etc. Is this a known issue? Please reply to my unpublished email in this post. Thanks.
@Dave, all settings are located in the Settings.app on your Springboard.
Couple of things I would love to see
1. a count of the unread items next to the feeds arrow (I like to know how many I have left to read – sad…. yes I know)
2. I would love to have the star button down at the bottom near the arrows. 95% of my button presses are the the up and down arrow and the star button.
3. I would love it if the read items only disappear from the list once I close the app. this means I can go back to the feed list, select a feed and see the items that I have read in this session (session being the time the app was open to the time it is closed)
4. Personal preference – having unread items have their title in bold and read in normal as opposed to the blue dot. I find I have to look twice to see if a feed is read – once at the title (cause this is what I am referencing) and then at the dot to see if it has been read or not.
@drumbo, thanks for the feedback. As with all feature suggestions we will put them on our list and the more requests that we get for them the higher up the list they move.
Mike, I may have found a new bug. It seems that since the 3.0 update (or at least the latest version of Feeds) emailing stories doesn’t seem to work. Every time I try I get a “connection was interrupted) message after a VERY long time in which the entire app gets very sluggish.
Also, I wanted to add my voice to those remarking on swipe-to-star sensitivity. After all these months of using your excellent app I’m suddenly starring items accidentally all over the place.
Looking forward to seeing these bugs ironed out. Feeds is still the best RSS app by a mile. Keep up the great work!
